Born on July 22, 1985, in South Williamson, KY, Sgt. Corey Maynard was the son of Steven Walter Maynard and Leslie Cather Maynard. Throughout his life, he demonstrated unwavering commitment and loyalty to his family, friends, and community.
Sgt. Maynard served the West Virginia State Police for 15 years, exemplifying professionalism and bravery. In January 2014, his courageous actions led to saving a pursuit suspect’s life, earning him the Lifesaving Award in 2015. Beyond his law enforcement career, he formed lasting relationships during his early work at Food City alongside his wife, Rachel.
A Proud Patriot and Passionate Individual
Sgt. Corey Maynard’s love for his country, fondly referring to it as “Merica,” was a testament to his unwavering patriotism. He was an avid baseball fan, especially passionate about the Baltimore Orioles. Traveling to Ireland and immersing himself in the soothing melodies of jazz music brought him joy and inspiration.

Sgt. Corey Maynard is survived by his parents, Steven Walter Maynard and Leslie Cather Maynard, his wife Rachel Maynard, and their two children, Zoe Aislinn and Finnegan Cory Maynard. He also leaves behind cherished memories for his sisters Patricia Bennett (Cole) and Sara Maynard (Ian Putnam), his nieces and nephews, and his parents-in-law, Gary and Gina Duncan.
In addition, Sgt. Maynard’s West Virginia State Police family and fellow law enforcement colleagues mourn his loss. His extended family, aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous friends also share in the grief.
Final Farewell and Commemoration
Funeral services for Sgt. Corey Maynard will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Mingo Central High School in Delbarton, WV. Major Jim Mitchell will officiate the ceremony. Prior to the service, a visitation will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the same location.
The procession route will honor Sgt. Maynard’s life, proceeding from Mingo Central High School onto King Coal Highway, Route 65, Route 52, and finally reaching Chapmanville, WV.
As per his final wishes, Sgt. Corey Maynard will continue to impact lives through tissue donation, ensuring his giving spirit lives on. Following the services, his remains will be cremated.
