Her love for her family was boundless, and she poured her heart and soul into her role as a dynamic leader at Gertrude Hawk Chocolates. Carolyn was also deeply involved in the philanthropic work of her parents’ foundation.

Gertrude Hawk Chocolates Pays Tribute to Carolyn Hawk Horter

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Gertrude Hawk Chocolates announced the passing of Carolyn Hawk Horter on June 3, 2023. Carolyn had been an integral part of the company throughout her life and left an indelible mark on both the business and the people she worked with. Even before officially joining the company, Carolyn would accompany her father on visits to the factory and stores, nurturing her love for the family business. In 2008, she became a member of the Gertrude Hawk Chocolates Board of Directors and served as the Chair of the Board since 2018.

During her tenure, Carolyn not only fulfilled her board responsibilities but also led the Quality and Research and Development teams. Known for her kindness and generosity, she was a beloved leader who fostered a positive work environment. Her unwavering dedication and passion for the business were evident in every aspect of her work. Her loss is deeply felt by her family, friends, and colleagues.

Carolyn Hawk Horter: A Life Dedicated to Family, Education, and Philanthropy

Carolyn was married to her high school sweetheart, Joe Horter, for 21 years, and together they raised four children: Julia, Ian, Max, and Nicholas. Despite the heartbreak of losing Nicholas in 2008, she found solace and happiness in her family, treasuring every moment spent with them. Carolyn was a proud graduate of Scranton Prep, New York University, and Syracuse University, and her interests ranged from cooking and reading to practicing yoga and enjoying walks with her beloved Maltese dog, Pickle.

She was a cherished daughter of David and Ann Walsh Hawk and a devoted business partner to her siblings, Jennifer Tarrach, Paul Hawk, and Patrick Hawk, at Gertrude Hawk Chocolates, where she held the position of Chairwoman since 2018. Carolyn’s unwavering hope and positivity were an inspiration to all. She took joy in the goodness of life and was passionate about supporting various community organizations, including the Dolly Parton Imagination Library project in Lackawanna County.

Funeral Arrangements and Support for Colon Cancer Screening

A Mass of Christian burial honoring Carolyn Hawk Horter will be held on Saturday, June 10, at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Paul’s Church on 1510 Penn Avenue in Scranton. The interment will be a private ceremony. Friends and well-wishers are invited to pay their respects on Friday, June 9, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Saint Paul’s Church. In lieu of contributions, Carolyn expressed her wish for friends to diligently maintain their colon cancer screenings or assist their loved ones in meeting their screening needs.
