Waltham, MA – Kenneth Wayne Bagnall, a man of unwavering love and warmth, peacefully passed away on May 1, 2023, surrounded by his adoring family. Born on August 23, 1945, in St. Clair, Michigan, Ken was the cherished son of the late Edward and Bertha (Reiche) Bagnall. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Alan and David, leaving behind a void in the hearts of those who knew him.

Ken’s educational journey started in Marysville, where he proudly played as a member of the state championship Vikings football team. He continued his studies at St. Clair Community College, where he met the love of his life, Gay (Grubbs). Together, they attended Eastern Michigan University, where Ken graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry. His dedication and passion for his field led him to a successful career as a respected analytical chemist for the R.P. Scherer Corporation, Flint Ink, and MacDermid. Ken’s expertise in solving complex puzzles made him an invaluable asset, living up to MacDermid’s motto, “let our experts find your solution.”
On July 12, 1969, Ken and Gay exchanged vows in Port Huron, Michigan, embarking on a lifelong journey filled with adventure and love. Their honeymoon took them to Vermont and New Hampshire, foreshadowing the countless memories they would create during their 53 years of marriage. From exploring almost every state, including the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska, to nurturing their three children, Kyle (Jenny), Keith (Wendy King), and Marybeth (Jim) Greene, Ken cherished every moment spent with his family.
Ken’s joy extended to his three granddaughters, Sophia Bagnall, Lotus Greene, and Cameron Greene. He eagerly attended their events, reveling in their achievements and showering them with love and support. Ken’s love knew no boundaries, as he extended his warmth to many nieces, nephews, and their Swedish exchange student, Henrik Samuelson, who became a beloved member of the family since 1988.
A deep appreciation for nature, particularly birds, defined Ken’s spirit. He found solace in the wonders of God’s creation, tending to numerous flowers and ferns around their home. Ken’s extensive bird life list stands as a testament to his passion for observing and cherishing the beauty of the avian world. As a natural storyteller, he delighted in sharing his experiences, captivating friends and loved ones with tales of his encounters.
Ken’s kindness and friendship endeared him to many. He touched the lives of those who crossed his path, leaving a lasting impression of love, laughter, and compassion. To his family, he was a pillar of strength and a source of unwavering support. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Ken’s life on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Thrive Church, located at 680 West Livingston Road, Highland, MI 48357. Visitation will begin at noon, followed by a service at 1:00 pm. The service will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and loved ones to come together, sharing cherished memories and bidding farewell to a remarkable man who touched their lives in profound ways.
